I am getting the ball rolling over at Gunslinger Games, a newly opened game store here in Dallas. There is a pre-existing community of players for WM/Hordes, but the median experience level is around new-ish.The players are still developing a comprehensive of the rules and are just starting to understand with subtle appreciation of a second warlock/warcaster or certain unique abilities. I want to continue promoting this without the backdrop of worrying about the map play this time around.
Instead I am running a Growth league.
Each week the players add points to their army and continually build it outwards. Week 1 will consist of 15 points only and it will end with Week 4 at 50. Points will be awarded for playing, winning, having most of your army painted or fully painted, and scenario play. I think it's a great way to introduce players into the game, build up a core army and promote the modelling aspect of the game. I cannot force players to paint, but by awarding bonus points each week I should be able to get them to appreciate color on the battlefield instead of pure metal.
Week 1: 15 pts, 1 bonus point if 90% of your army is painted. 1 bonus point of 100%. Scenario: Killbox
Week 2: 25 pts. I've scheduled a Death Race tournament for this week so all games count as league games. Bonus point for 85% painted, 1 bonus point for 100%. Scenario Killbox.
Week 3: 35 pts. 80% painted: 1 pt, 100% painted: 1 add'l point. SR 2011 scenarios.
Week 4: 50 pts. 75% painted: 1 pt, 100% painted: 2 add'l points. SR 2011 scenarios.
Right now scoring is set up:
2 points per game, with an additional point for the victor. Players can play the same opponent again, but I am counting only the first game. If the player wins by scenario (even in Killbox), 1 add'l point is granted to them.
I have three awards. First is the league coin for Conqueror (most points). Second is General (most scenario wins). And third is voted by the players for Paint Slinger (voted best painter). Patches for those in the league.
After league after Windless Wastes I will follow the map, although I have plans for the finale being a come-and-go tournament where the boards are modelled after the faction holdings. Players get faction bonuses and it will be capture the flags to control the board. Similar to a few the releases. 35 pts, 3 different lists, attrition rules, deathclock at 35 min/player. Characters cannot be repeated in each list. Games start at 12 PM, end at 7 PM (no game may be started after 6:05 PM).
